+Great news for those with disabilities! Are you aware of ABLE Accounts? They’ve been around for about five years but many people have not heard of them or understood the benefits they offer. The Social Security Administration has launched an effort to spread the word. People who are disabled can open an ABLE (Achieving A Better Life Experience) Account which allows them to earn some income tax free. Money that goes into an ABLE account can be used for qualified expenses related to their disability. These can include money for their housing, transportation costs, health related expenses, financial planning and investment education and more. Importantly, having an ABLE account won’t affect your qualifying for SSI and money in the account won’t be counted toward your $200 asset limit.

If you are having trouble getting your application for Social Security Disability approved there are several reasons for that. A combination of stricter rules for the judges who approve (or disapprove) disability claims plus the tightening labor market that is forcing employers to consider people with disabilities for hire has resulted in a significant drop in the number of people who are getting disability benefits from the federal government. Many have found jobs — the unemployment rate for the disabled has fallen by almost 5% since 2014. This doesn’t mean you can’t still apply for disability benefits — just be extra careful to provide all the necessary paperwork.
